Woffinden Dream Display in Rockets Nightmare
Somerset 66 Rye House 27
(Premier League, Friday May 9th)
This was a night largely to forget for the Silver Ski Rockets, who were trampled by a ruthless Somerset team fresh from a 15 point victory at Redcar the previous evening, and which is looking to be a serious contender for this year’s silverware.
The Rockets were salvaged by a magnificent display from Tai Woffinden, who contributed over half the side’s points total and was beaten only by Emil Kramer in Heat 4. Woffinden went on to reel off four straight race wins, including one when nominated for double points, and ended every Rebel’s maximum hopes.
There was very little else of cheer for travelling Rye supporters. Robert Mear and Luke Bowen kept Brent Werner at the rear of the field for a one and a half laps in Heat 8, and Stefan Ekberg missed out for second against Mattias Kroger right on the line in Heat 14, but every race not featuring Woffinden eventually finished as a Somerset 5-1.

Rockets Squeeze Past Monarchs in Thriller
Rye House 48 Edinburgh 42
(Premier League, Saturday May 10th)
The Silver Ski Rockets bounced back from the previous night’s thumping at Somerset to hand the Monarchs only their second defeat of the season. In a tense match, in which both the score and racing remained equally tight, they came back from four points down to clinch the win in the penultimate heat.
All the Rockets played their part in this result. Tai Woffinden delivered his customary big haul, while Stefan Ekberg contributed three race wins and captain Chris Neath rebounded from a string of recent mechanical problems to top the Rye score-chart. Lower down, Robert Mear showed that he intends to make his transition to the main body of the team as seamless as possible, and Luke Bowen soldiered on through the pain of his shoulder injury. Finally, Danny Halsey contributed a critical point at a key time in the match, and could not be faulted for his determination and effort.
The Monarchs, for their part, more than impressed, and certainly look a serious threat for the title. Despite the absence of Thomas Jonasson with rib and leg injuries, they demonstrated that they have real strength in depth and the ability to produce race wins at all levels. They also have an excellent trump card at reserve in Andrew Tully, with partner Aaron Summers showing rapid development, and could well have achieved a different result if Derek Sneddon, who has matured into their second heat leader role, had not had such a torrid time.
It was Tully who delivered the first warning sign of the Monarchs’ intent by winning Heat 1 in a new fastest time of the season at Rye (56.5 secs), and then passing Danny Halsey to join Summers for a visiting 5-1 in Heat 2.
The Rockets fought back in the next race, with Robert Mear surging inside Ryan Fisher for the win and Tai Woffinden finding incredible drive off the fourth bend to take Sneddon, for the 4-2. Edinburgh answered with a 4-2 of their own in Heat 5, with Matthew Wethers rounding Luke Bowen on the third lap to claim the win and Stefan Ekberg remaining at the back of the field, to leave the score at 14-10 in their favour.
Woffinden won Heat 5 in a new season-fastest time (56.3 secs), and at one point Heat 6 looked set to deliver a Rockets 5-1. Chris Neath took the chequered flag, but Robert Mear unfortunately locked up while battling Wethers for second place and slipped to the back.
The deficit was reduced to just 2 points, at 22-20, when Ekberg and Halsey finished either side of Fisher in Heat 7, while Mear opened a door for both himself and Bowen by powering forcefully under Summers, to ensure a shared Heat 8.
There was yet more passing in the next race, won by Woffinden from the back against Tully, before Mear and Neath supplied the Rockets’ only 5-1 of the night to finally take them into the lead, at 31-29.
Woffinden and Bowen improved that margin with a 4-2 in Heat 12, while Neath blasted around Matthew Wethers for the victory that maintained that advantage in Heat 13. This was after Stefan Ekberg had been the innocent victim of a first bend domino effect, requiring treatment ahead of the re-run, and just before the Swede partnered Bowen to the 4-2 against Andrew Tully in Heat 14 that wrapped up a Rye win with a race to spare.
Rye House scorers:
Chris Neath 12+1 (5 rides)
Robert Mear 9+1 (5)
Tai Woffinden 11+1 (5)
Tommy Allen R/R

Happy Anniversary!
Promoter Len Silver revealed during Saturday’s pre-match parade that he had received an unexpected phone call earlier that day from former rider Terry Stone. Terry had called to wish Len a happy anniversary, noting that it was some 40 years to the day that Len had first run the original Rockets at Rayleigh!
Needless to say, congratulations to Len, with many thanks to Terry on his fine gesture (and excellent record-keeping!).
Captain’s Corner
Chris Neath had the following to say after Saturday’s win against Edinburgh:
“It was great to get through the night without a mechanical problem. I’ve got to say thank you to Tommy Allen, who leant me a magic box tonight. I had a brand new one for yesterday’s match at Somerset - £600 worth of equipment – and the thing broke down in the first race. After tonight’s meeting, I also tried out a carburettor that has been playing up the last few meetings, and hopefully we’ve sorted out that problem as well.
“We had to work hard for every point tonight. Edinburgh seem to be a very solid unit; they’ve got good riders throughout their team, and they made life very difficult for us. It just shows that if teams come here and just attack the track, they can run us close. We don’t have the home track advantage that critics seem to think. They were really up for it tonight, and every one of us had to work 110% for every point.
“Robert stood out for his big points at No.2. He has been riding really well this year, and it is really pleasing to see another guy developing out of our Conference team, coming through and putting on a good show. And Luke contributed importantly. He looked a little bit uncomfortable tonight compared to earlier in the year – I think his shoulder is giving him a bit of gip still – but he’ll come good, and we’ll always have good reserves, whether it’s Luke down there or Rob.
“We’ll definitely be going for revenge against Somerset next Saturday. I have to say that a lot of credit goes out to them for last night’s result. As much as we weren’t on our game, they were absolutely fantastic. I’ve never been to Somerset before and seen all seven riders perform as they did. They rode us completely out of the stadium, to be honest. But we are up for a big one, we really want to do it. We had a really tough match tonight – we’ve had defeats here in the past, but tonight’s was the toughest match I’ve been through at Rye House – and next week we are on for a big performance and we really want to show our fans what we can do.”
Cobras Complete Double to Make Cup Semis
Sittingbourne 42 Rye House 47 (agg: 75-106)
(Conference League KO Cup, Sunday May 11th)
Already holding a 26 point advantage from the first leg, the Kart Raceway Cobras completed a smooth passage into the competition’s final four, and in the process also made their first away match of the year a winning one. With Lee Strudwick, Gary Cottham and Danny Halsey leading the scoring drive, and five different Cobras winning races, they never let their hosts get away on the score-chart, and ultimately pulled clear themselves in the final third of the meeting.
The Cobras trailed early on, when Terry Day fell after a lightning gate alongside Andrew Aldridge in Heat 3, and Jerran Hart and Dean Felton took advantage with a home 5-1 in the re-run. They were quickly level, though, following an identical score-line from Strudwick and Cottham in the next race, and took the lead for the first time, at 22-20, following another maximum, this time from Day and Aldridge in Heat 7.
The same pair were on the receiving end of a 5-1 from Felton and Harland Cook as the Crusaders regained the lead, at 31-29, after Heat 10, but Halsey and Cottham (in for the time-excluded Smith) returned the favour against Alex Cunningham and Aaron Baseby in the next race, to put Rye back in front – this time to stay.
Aldridge won Heat 12 from Hart, with Richard Franklin nipping past Baseby for third, as the Cobras’ advantage widened to 4, and Halsey and Strudwick produced another 4-2 by finishing either side of Felton in the following race. They were the only points dropped by Strudwick across both legs of the tie.
The match was clinched when Jerran Hart lost a chain and fell while leading Heat 14. Although Terry Day also hit the deck in the re-run, the resultant 3-2 left Rye clear, at 44-39 with one race to go. That heat was shared following Strudwick’s fourth victory of the day.
Rye House scorers:
Danny Halsey 9+1 (4 rides)
Rob Smith 2 (4)
Andrew Aldridge 6+1 (4)
Terry Day 4 (5)
Lee Strudwick 13 (5)
Richard Franklin 3 (4)
Gary Cottham 10+3 (5)
Sittingbourne scorers:
Dean Felton 13+2 (6 rides)
Harland Cook 6+2 (5)
Mark Baseby R/R
Jerran Hart 12 (6)
Alex Cunningham 1 (4)
Aaron Baseby 7+1 (6)

Rockets on the Road
The Silver Ski Rockets travel to the Norfolk Arena on Wednesday, eager to erase memories of their last visit, when the early loss of Tai Woffinden left them chasing a 61-31 score-line.
The Rockets will remain unchanged from Saturday’s team against Edinburgh, with Rider-Replacement in operation for Tommy Allen and Danny Halsey covering for Danny Betson. Allen is undergoing intensive physiotherapy and will have a knee brace fitted today (May 12th), with a target to return to the side against Somerset this Saturday. Betson, meanwhile, is expected to remain sidelined for at least the next couple of weeks with a hairline fracture of his left elbow.
Next in Town: Somerset
The Silver Ski Rockets will be targeting revenge – and two critical Premier League points – when the Rebel Army hits town on Saturday. The Rockets are still aching from last Friday’s 66-27 hammering at the Oak Tree Arena against a side that has made a hot start to the season. Somerset were unlucky to miss out on a semi-final place in the Premier Trophy on race points difference – this, despite winning away at both Reading and Newport in their group matches – but have already made amends by dumping Newcastle out of the Knock-Out Cup, winning at Redcar in the League, and blitzing the Rockets last Friday.
While previous leader Magnus Zetterstrom is no longer in the West Country, the Rebels have re-grouped well for 2008, bringing in former Poole Pirate and Isle of Wight Islander Jason Doyle to form a new spearhead with third year star Emil Kramer and 2006 European Grass-Track Champion Stefan Katt. Their middle order comprises Jordan Frampton and recent addition (as a replacement for Mildenhall-bound Henning Loof) Matthias Kroeger, who finished 6th in last year’s European Grass-Track event and 13th in the World Long-Track series. Their reserves are Simon Walker and three-times Overseas Finalist – and captain of the Rockets’ championship side of 2005 – The American Express Brent Werner.
