Star-Struck at Saddlebow
King’s Lynn 61 Rye House 31
(Premier Trophy, Wednesday March 26th 2008)
This was one largely to forget for the Silver Ski Rockets, who succumbed to the Trophy holders at “Fortress Norfolk” by thirty points after providing just one race winner and conceding no less than seven maximum heat advantages. A major factor in the final score-line, though, was the loss of Tai Woffinden with cuts and ligament damage following a first ride fall. The 17 year old’s early withdrawal left a huge gap in the roster, and it was down to Chris Neath to hold the side together, the captain responding by blasting three great wins and 13 points. Robert Mear also chipped in with valuable points, plugging away for a final score of paid 8 from a full complement of seven rides.
The match actually began brightly for the Rockets, with Neath heading home Tomas Topinka in the opening heat, and Danny Betson and Mear filling the minor positions behind Simon Lambert in the next, to make it 6-6.
Unfortunately, that was as close as it got, and the night soon turned black. Tommy Allen ground to a halt within a lap of the start in Heat 3, and partner Woffinden hit the deck two circuits later, to gift the home side a 5-0 and leave the Rockets a key rider short. With Stefan Ekberg finishing between Lambert and Rusty Harrison in the next race, the Stars extended their advantage to 15-8, and then swiftly to 25-10, following a tapes exclusion for Neath and two more maximum advantages.
Tommy Allen surged from third to first in Heat 7, only to lose his lead to Rusty Harrison on the third lap, with Robert Mear’s third place ensuring a drawn result, before further home maximums in Heats 8 and 10 took the score to 41-18.
Cue Neath’s appearance in a black and white helmet cover for double points in Heat 11, and the testimonial man duly held off Rusty Harrison to claim the six points on offer. The Rye captain followed up by claiming his third win of the night in Heat 13, an easy romp against Harrison and Tomas Topinka, but had to admit second best in the nominated race to Kevin Doolan and Simon Lambert, who both completed maximums in the process.
The result leaves the Rockets plotting revenge for Saturday’s return match at Hoddesdon (7.00pm) in order to keep alive their hopes of further progress in this year’s Trophy competition.
