Newport vs Rye House: Postponed
Rye House Speedway was deeply saddened to learn of the sudden death of Newport promoter Tim Stone. Sunday’s scheduled KO Cup second leg was immediately postponed.
The club sends its deepest sympathies to Tim’s family and friends, and everyone involved at Newport, and sincerely hopes that the Wasps’ immediate future can be resolved in a positive manner in the very near future.
Woffinden is the Man – It’s Gold at the U-21 Final
British U-21 Final
(Lakeside; Friday, April 25th)
Teenage sensation Tai Woffinden went two rostrum places better than last year’s impressive bronze finish by powering to the 2008 British U-21 Championship. Looking so impressive in the main twenty race programme, the 17 year old dropped just a single point in his five scheduled rides, to main challenger Lewis Bridger in his final outing. He then withstood tremendous pressure from 2007 Rocket Adam Roynon in a Grand Final which was re-run after Bridger had been excluded for bringing down Ben Barker while duelling with Woffinden for the lead.
Last year’s Silver medallist William Lawson and former Rocket Steve Boxall – freshly back from a dislocated shoulder – were both eliminated at the semi-final stage.
Woffinden is the second Silver Ski Rocket to win the crown, following in the footsteps of 2005 Champion Edward Kennett, and becomes the first rider to hold this title and the British U-18 crown simultaneously. An added plus is that he is automatically seeded to the Semi-Final stage of the World U-21 event, and will take his place in the Rye House round on Sunday, June 15th.
At the other end of the scale for Rye, Danny Betson spent some time in the track ambulance nursing leg and shoulder injuries after rearing and falling driving off the fourth bend in Heat 12. He was eventually released with bruising, but took no further part in the meeting, although worse was unfortunately to befall him the following night..
Danny Halsey, meanwhile, weighed in with three points, finishing ahead of Sean Stoddart and Betson in Heat 7, and Lee Strudwick in his final race, while Strudwick beat out former Raider Harland Cook in a terrific tussle for his only point of the night in Heat 5.
Scorers from main 20 heats: Tai Woffinden 14, Lewis Bridger 13 (both straight to Grand Final), Adam Roynon 13, William Lawson 11, Ben Barker 11, Steve Boxall 10 (3rd-6th to Semi-Final), Joe Haines 9, Jack Roberts 8, Josh Auty 8, Lee Smart 6, Charles Wright 5, Sean Stoddart 5, Danny Halsey 3, Harland Cook 2, Lee Strudwick 1, Danny Betson 0 (3 rides).
Reserves: Andrew Tully 2, Kyle Hughes 0, Gareth Isherwood dnr.
Semi-Final: (both to Grand Final):
Ben Barker, Adam Roynon, William Lawson, Steve Boxall (fell).
Grand Final: Tai Woffinden, Adam Roynon, Ben Barker, Lewis Bridger (fex).
Congratulations to Tai on this tremendous achievement, and the best of luck now for the World Semi-Final at Rye House on June 15th.
Mear Cat on the Prowl
Rye House 60 Newport 30
(PL Knock-Out Cup, Saturday April 26th)
The Silver Ski Rockets overcame their immediate injury problems – and a latest new set-back – to put themselves firmly in the driving seat against the Wasps in the first leg of this first round tie. The highlight of the night was a magnificent 7 ride display from Robert Mear. The 19 year old based in Hatfield was the undoubted star of the meeting, and a maximum man in all but name in contributing a remarkable paid 20. Newly crowned British U-21 Champion Tai Woffinden proved a maximum man in name, while Chris Neath and Stefan Ekberg both dropped points in a single race.
Already without Tommy Allen and Luke Bowen, the Rockets’ negative came early on when they lost Danny Betson to injury after a Heat 2 fall. Betson bravely rode in the re-run, but pulled up within a couple of laps, and was diagnosed with a possible fractured left elbow. Further news as we receive it.
Prior to that incident, Chris Neath had got the Rockets’s show on the road by winning the opening race in the fastest time of the season at Rye (56.8 secs), while immediately after it Tai Woffinden powered from last to first in a lap and a half to win Heat 3.
Maximums from the pairings of Stefan Ekberg/Robert Mear and Ekberg/Woffinden in the next two races pulled the Rockets clear, at 21-9, with the latter race particularly memorable for Woffinden’s late drive inside Craig Watson to steal second spot.
Another 5-1, again from Ekberg and Mear, followed in Heat 7, before Danny Halsey confirmed his never-say-die attitude by just catching Nick Simmons for third place right on the line. Mear won that particular race, at that stage his fourth unbeaten ride of the night.
Another three points came the Mear Cat’s way in Heat 11, with Craig Watson and Nick Simmons left to contest the minor placings with a surprisingly subdued Ekberg, and a sixth success – this time alongside Tai Woffinden in the next race – took his personal tally to 17+1 from 6 rides, and the Rockets to 49-23.
Chris Neath proved over-excited at the start of Heat 13, leading to a tapes exclusion and 15 metre handicap. With Stefan Ekberg storming the re-run and Craig Watson blowing up big time, Neath was closing in on Paul Clews for second place only to grind to a halt, and have to push his machine for nearly a lap to claim third spot.
There was more heartbreak to come for the Rockets in Heat 14. Looking to complete an incredible paid 21 point maximum, Robert Mear was on-course for victory, only to shred a tyre on the very last bend, and gift Marek Mroz the Wasps’ only race win of the night. Neath and Woffinden did their best to make amends in the nominated heat, however, with Woffinden surging past Clews and Mroz in a single bend on lap two to join his partner for the Rockets’ fifth 5-1 of the match and complete his personal maximum.

Captain’s Comments
Team captain Chris Neath had the following to say after Saturday’s home win against Newport:
“It was great to get the fastest time of the year so far in Heat 1, although I felt I could have gone quicker until I lost my primary chain guard. My leg started to hit the clutch and I was trying to keep it out of the chain on the last couple of laps, so I couldn’t really put the bike where I wanted to.
“The bike felt good all night. It was driving really hard, and it felt like I had good speed when I needed it.
“As for Heat 13 (when Chris had to push for a point), it was just something stupid – a split fuel pipe – and, if we hadn’t had the restarts, it might have done the four laps, but they were my fault anyway. I was disappointed; I had a bit of good fortune with Craig Watson blowing an engine, but I think I would have got past Paul Clews. I was just lining him up when the bike lost all its power.
“Pushing home for just under a lap was more frustrating than anything. I didn’t feel tired, really, just angry, but running around probably helped me burn some anger off!
“The injury curse is unfortunately striking again, with Tai, Stefan, Luke, Tommy and now Danny. We don’t really know where we stand with Tommy and Luke until they’ve been for further examination, and now there is a problem with Danny. It is so frustrating for the team; it is so difficult to cover for riders. Fortunately, we still had a good result tonight. Robert was absolutely fantastic, and I felt really sorry for him getting a puncture at the end to ruin a 21 point maximum.
“It will be tough going up to Workington next weekend, and having them here on Bank Holiday Monday. The Comets look a very good team this year. It will be tough, but as always we will just do the best we can in both matches.”
The Things They Said
Tommy Allen
Talking about the knee ligament damage he suffered in Sweden this last week: “I caught my foot in the corner, and really jarred my leg as I went down. It was just the way I fell, but it’s the same knee that I injured last year, and it’s not good at the moment. I’m having a scan on Monday, and we’ll know more then.”
Luke Bowen
About his own shoulder injury: “I’ve never had a shoulder injury like this before, and it’s been incredibly painful because the muscle and ligament are hanging relatively loosely. I am seeing the physio on Tuesday, and the aim is obviously to get back in action as soon as possible, but I can’t say any more than that at the moment.”
Newport vs Rye House: Postponed
Rye House Speedway was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Newport promoter Tim Stone. Sunday’s scheduled KO Cup second leg was immediately postponed.
Rockets on The Road
Next weekend will be a busy one for the Silver Ski Rockets, who venture up to Workington on Saturday (May 3rd) for their first away match in the Premier League, before zipping south and east to Mildenhall the following afternoon for their final match in the Premier Trophy.
Their Bank Holiday weekend is completed by the return match against the Comets at Hoddesdon on Monday afternoon.
Next in Town (1): Sittingbourne
With the Silver Ski Rockets away at Workington, the Kart Raceway Cobras will take centre stage at Rye House on Saturday night as they face their first competitive match of the season. The Cup theme of this last weekend will be maintained at a Conference League level, as the Cobras tackle the Sittingbourne Crusaders in the first leg of a first round tie.
Although both teams’ specific line-ups are yet to be finalised at time of writing, it is no surprise that the Cobras are planning to give three-time New Zealand U-21 Champion Andrew Aldridge his first competitive rides of the year. The Crusaders’ 2008 roster, meanwhile, includes the likes of highly rated prospect Jerran Hart (who saw action for Newport at Hoddesdon on Saturday), former Berwick, Stoke and Long Eaton regular Dean Felton, British U-21 Finalist (and former Elmside Raider) Harland Cook, Aaron Baseby and former Rye, Mildenhall and Newport man Barry Burchatt.
The second leg is scheduled for Kent on Sunday, May 11th.
Next in Town (2): Workington
Fast-forward two days from Saturday’s Cobras clash, and the Silver Ski Rockets will be back on home turf on Bank Holiday Monday. The opposition is the Workington Comets, and a visiting team favoured by the Speedway press for a top two finish this year. Included in their roster are former King’s Lynn No.1 Daniel Nermark, who was pivotal to the Stars’ five national trophies across 2006 and 2007, former three-year Grand Prix star and double Premier League Riders Champion Carl Stonehewer, Flying Finn Kauko Nieminen, comeback man Scott “Scud” Smith and 2006 British U-15 Champion Joe Haines, whose first professional year has already brought scores such as paid 9 against Glasgow and paid 7 in the Comets’ win at Newcastle.
The start time on Bank Holiday Monday is 2pm. |
