Rockets Go Down in “Survival of the Fittest”
Birmingham 50 Rye House 36 (abandoned at Heat 14; result stands)
(Premier Trophy, Wednesday April 2nd 2008)
A full maximum from Jason Lyons and tremendous back-up from reserve Jack Hargreaves helped to sink the Rockets at Perry Barr, as a raft of falls and exclusions in the early stages led to the match quickly developing into “survival of the fittest”. With further delays necessitated by reserve replacement changes, the meeting was abandoned at Heat 14 due to the time curfew in place.
Those also present at last year’s Premier Trophy Semi-Final will certainly have felt they’d been there before. The Rockets finished that particular meeting with just three fit riders. This time around, they completed the night with five regulars. With Rider-Replacement in operation for hand injury victim Tai Woffinden, they lost Luke Bowen to a heavy tumble in Heat 3 after the Bowen 747 had led double World Cup winner Jason Lyons for two and a half laps.
The Brummies also ended the match with just five men. In their case, both Kyle Legault and James Birkinshaw were ruled out after the Canadian had lifted and collected his partner on the second bend of Heat 6.
At that point, the Rockets trailed by 10 points, but Phil Morris fell while leading the next race, leaving Tommy Allen and Chris Neath (nominated for double points as a Tactical Rider) to capture a 7-1 and claw Rye back to 24-20.
Any hopes of completing the comeback were short-lived however, as Birmingham promptly responded with maximums in each of the next three races, before Neath snapped that run by winning Heat 11. The Rockets’ captain, who had earlier won the opening race, completed a trio of victories in Heat 13, to erase memories of an unfortunate second ride, when a two minute exclusion led to his subsequent withdrawal when re-nominated off a 15 metre handicap.
Overall, Neath once again led the way for Rye, with his biggest support coming from Tommy Allen, courtesy of his Heat 7 success and a nice pass of Jack Hargreaves in what proved to be the final heat.
The Rockets will hope for a quick revenge when the sides meet in the return match at Hoddesdon on Saturday (April 5th, 7pm)
