Rain, Rain, Go Away

Rye House vs King’s Lynn – Postponed

(Premier Trophy, Saturday, March 29th 2008)

The Silver Ski Rockets’ eagerly awaited return match against the Stars was the latest Rye House fixture to fall to the rain. With showers the day before, but much heavier ones predicted for the afternoon, the Rockets’ promotion made the early call to postpone the fixture at 11.30 in the morning. Len Silver’s crystal ball once again proved uncannily accurate, as the wet stuff returned on cue.

It was the fourth Rockets match – three postponements, plus one abandonment – to fall victim to the weather in the first three weeks of the season, and a Kart Racing Cobras match has also been lost to the rain.

Rockets on the Road

The Silver Ski Rockets travel to Birmingham on Wednesday (April 2nd) to tackle the Brummies in the Premier Trophy. The Rockets won at Perry Bar in the League last season – and were more than a little unlucky in the Premier Trophy Semi-Finals, when they finished the match with just three fit riders – against a Birmingham side that more than proved itself overall last term, finishing 2nd in the final League table and reaching both the Trophy and Young Shield Finals.

As of press time, there are still question marks over the fitness of Tai Woffinden for this meeting. The 17 year old suffered a nasty gash to his hand in his fall at King’s Lynn last Wednesday and the hand is currently very swollen. The Rider-Replacement facility would have been in operation if Saturday’s return against the Stars had gone ahead, but if Woffinden is forced out of the trip to Birmingham, the Rockets plan to bring in a guest as coverage for their injured No.1. Although that replacement is as yet unconfirmed, possible options include a former Rye House star.

British U-21 Round Details

Silver Ski Rocket Tai Woffinden has been named as one of the seven riders seeded to the British U-21 Final at Lakeside on Friday, April 25th. (Two others are former Rockets Steve Boxall and Adam Roynon).

There is plenty of further Rye House involvement in the qualifying rounds, with Danny Betson, Robert Mear and Robert Smith named to compete at Plymouth on April 11th, and Danny Halsey, Lee Strudwick and Nick Laurence competing at Weymouth the following night. The top three finishers in each round will qualify for the Lakeside-staged Final.

Rye House will stage one of the Semi-Finals of the World U-21 Championship on Sunday, June 15th (2pm).
