Woffinden Maximum Sparks Rockets Win
Rye House 54 Birmingham 36
(Premier Trophy, Saturday April 5th 2008)
A five ride paid maximum from Tai Woffinden on his return from a hand injury proved pivotal to this Rockets win, which gained revenge for Wednesday’s 14 point defeat at Perry Barr, and also kept Rye’s Premier Trophy hopes alive. Tommy Allen (paid 13), Danny Betson (11) and Robert Mear (7) also did their bit to tip an exciting see-saw match, in which the Rockets took an early 12 point lead, only to see that advantage whittled down to just 2, before a late surge of four consecutive 5-1s ultimately drove them well clear again.
The night began with Luke Bowen (also back from a hand injury) and Chris Neath (riding his second bike after his first choice engine blew in the pre-meeting warm-up) rolling over former Rocket Adam Roynon in Heat 1.
That early four point advantage was doubled via another 5-1in Heat 3. The race was building to a stormer when Jason Lyons locked up and fell directly in front of the chasing Woffinden on the second lap. The 17 year old did exceptionally well to quickly lay his machine down, as did Allen and Roynon, but was still hit by his team-mate. After being treated by medical staff, Woffinden appeared for the re-run - and maximum points with the Tommy Gun.
The “TT Racers” inflicted a similar score – once again on Lyons – in Heat 5, to lift the Rockets’ advantage to 21-9, only for Birmingham to hit back with a maximum of their own in the next race, as Phil Morris and Jack Hargreaves outpaced Luke Bowen and Chris Neath. Heat 7 went the same way, after Stefan Ekberg lost control and fell on the fourth bend, as Lyons and Roynon pulled the Brummies back to 23-19.
Danny Betson maintained the Rockets’ narrowing lead by driving inside Hargreaves to win Heat 8, but Luke Bowen fell while challenging for second spot, to hand the Brummies a 3-3.
At that point the heavens promptly opened, with a short but very heavy shower. Woffinden and Tommy Allen finished either side of Phil Morris in a Heat 9 whose slow time (65 seconds) confirmed the impact of the weather on track conditions, before the match was put on hold. Fortunately, the rain stopped, Len Silver’s subsequent track work paid off, and the meeting was able to resume.
An immediate 5-1 from Lyons and Roynon against Bowen and Neath brought the Brummies to within just 2 points, at 31-29; the closest they had been all night, and only a third lap pass of Hargreaves by Stefan Ekberg to join Betson and force a 3-3 kept the Rockets ahead after Heat 11.
With the match entering its crucial stage, the Rockets finally found that extra something. It started when Woffinden and Robert Mear headed home Hargreaves and Lyons in Heat 12, and continued with a repeat performance from Ekberg and Neath in the next race, as Rye suddenly moved back ahead by 10 points.
That brought Roynon’s nomination as a Tactical Rider for double points in Heat 14, but both Tommy Allen and Danny Betson took the Furness Flyer from the back, for the 5-1 that clinched the win with a heat to spare. That final heat saw Woffinden complete his maximum in another sterling partnership with fellow “TT Racer” Allen against Morris and Lyons.
Full credit to the Brummies, who certainly deserved a better final score. Despite the absence of Kyle Legault (broken leg) and James Birkinshaw (bruising), they gave their all in this thriller. Phil Morris provided vital stability, while Jack Hargreaves continued to show his early season breakthrough form, and but for a subdued night from main man Jason Lyons and a better haul from Rider-Replacement (just 4 points) could well have taken the points. Finding a replacement for Legault will be key, but with the right new signing they should enjoy a strong season.

The Things They Said
Tai Woffinden
“I really enjoyed tonight; to come back from ten days away with a maximum felt really good.
“The only bad moment was in Heat 3, when Jason (Lyons) fell, I laid the bike down, and Tommy ran into the back of me and trashed my back a bit. It was one of those things that happens really quickly. You’ve just got to be switched on and know what’s happening. As soon as I saw Jason start to lock up and go down, I started to drop my bike. Obviously, Tommy and Adam (Roynon) did the same thing as well. It was quite lucky that we did, because it could have been a lot worse.
“As it was, Tommy’s exhaust went right down my back and my lower spine. It hurts now, and it’s swollen. I’m just going to dose up on pain-killers, and see my physio tomorrow.
“That aside, it was good.to get my partnership with Tommy back together. I think it was three 5-1s and a 4-2 we got tonight. You know, Tommy’s alright every now and then; he tends to crash into you here and there, and you have to wait for him a little bit, but he’s alright!”

“It was a really good meeting; we just had one minor blip when we had the thunderstorm in the middle of the meeting, but other than that it was a good night.
“Heat 3 could have turned out a lot worse. Tai was racing Jason (Lyons) in front, and I was racing with Adam (Roynon) at the rear, so I had to go into the corner quite hard and wide, which is when Jason made his mistake. It turned into a bit of carnage.
“When the rain started to come down, Graham Drury (the Brummies promoter) thought that he was in with a shot. We were all aware of that, and we tried to step our game up for the last few heats, and it turned out well.
“To get another big haul felt really good. Heat 14 was perhaps the pick of the bunch. We didn’t want to let them get away with big points from the Tactical Ride, so for both Danny (Betson) and myself to get past Adam (Roynon) and prevent that felt a little extra special.”
