Meet the 2008 Silver Ski Rockets

The Rockets have made two changes to the side that climaxed 2007 by winning the Premier League gold for the second time in three seasons in order to accommodate the 41 ½ point team building limit. Steve Boxall has stepped up to the Elite League with Belle Vue, while Adam Roynon has moved to Birmingham. Plugging those gaps are Robert Mear, who gets his shot at the professional leagues after two powerful Conference seasons, and Danny Betson, who returns to Hoddesdon after a year’s absence for his own opportunity to break through into the Premier League.

The Competitions and Rule Change

The single biggest change to the sport during the winter came with the agreement at the BSPA AGM to introduce promotion and relegation play-offs between the Elite and Premier Leagues. The top four finishers in the latter will meet in semi-finals and a final to determine which team will face one of the bottom two Elite League teams for the right to compete in the 2009 Elite League

The promotion play-offs will be independent of the Premier League Championship. The title will go to the side finishing top of the table over the regular season

The Premier League itself will consist of 17 teams, with the addition from last year’s roster of Conference League Champions Scunthorpe and former Elite League side Reading. The points limit for team building has been set at 41.5

The aggregate bonus point has been cancelled. Instead, teams will receive two points for a home win, but three for an away success. Participants in a drawn match will still receive one point each.

In addition to defending the League championship, the Silver Ski Rockets will face Newport in the first round of the Knock-Out Cup, and will compete in a first round group in the Premier Trophy which also comprises Mildenhall, 2007 Finalists Birmingham and back-to-back winners King’s Lynn. The top team in each group will qualify for the Semi-Finals alongside the other three group winners.

Rye House will also once again feature in Conference League action, competing in what will be an eight strong League programme as well as the Knock-Out Cup (in which they face Sittingbourne in the first round). The former Raiders have been re-christened the Kart Racing Cobras, following last week’s sponsorship agreement with the neighbouring Rye House Kart Raceway.

The Dates (Key Early Fixtures at Rye)

Five days after opening their 2008 programme at Reading in the first leg of the Thames Valley Trophy (Monday, March 10th), the Silver Ski Rockets begin their home fixtures as they host the Racers in the return decider at Hoddesdon (Saturday, March 15th, 7pm). It has been virtually “all-change” at Smallmead during the winter, and change for the better, with the Racers seen by many as front-runners for this season’s title. Mark Lemon is the only survivor of last year’s Elite League squad, and will be joined in the Racers’ new look spearhead by Ulrich Ostergaard, former Danish international Tom P. Madsen and 2005 World U-21 Silver medallist Tomas Suchanek. Chris Mills, Danny Warwick and Jamie Smith round off a very interesting Reading septet.

The following Saturday (March 22nd) sees the Kart Racing Cobras in action for the first time as they face a Conference League level Arena Essex side in a special local derby challenge match. Exciting New Zealand newcomer Andrew Aldridge is due to arrive in Britain two days earlier to take his place in the Cobras’ side.

Fast forward two days to Easter Monday (March 24th,2pm), and the Silver Ski Rockets return to action, this time for their first home fixture in the Premier Trophy, as they tackle a new-look opponent renewing what in this case is a long-established rivalry. The Mildenhall Fen Tigers have a radically re-built side that now comprises 2007 Grand Prix star Kaj Laukannen, 2007 Rocket Robbie Kessler, young Danish prospects Jan Graverson and Casper Wortmann, New Zealand U-21 Champion Grant Tregoning and former Raiders James Cockle and Mark Baseby.

The Rockets were Trophy winners in 2005, and competition semi-finalists last year, and will be determined to progress again this time around from what looks an ultra-tough group.

The final Saturday in March (29th) brings another much   anticipated fixture as the Rockets meet up with King’s Lynn in the Premier Trophy. Simply put, it’s a match-up that brings the reigning League champions head to head against the 2006 titlists and current Knock-Out Cup and Trophy holders.

Reading, Mildenhall, Poole and King’s Lynn are just for starters, in March. Just some of the other red letter dates from the 2007 home programme at Hoddesdon are:

  1. -          The World U-21 Semi-Final on Sunday, June 15th
  2. -          Chris Neath’s Testimonial Meeting on Saturday, September 20th
  3. -          The 2008 Conference League Riders Championship, sponsored by www.hireacanalboat.co.uk, one week later.
